چکیده

[1] A rapid headspace method for the simultaneous laboratory determination of intentionally introduced hydrologic tracers, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), trifluoromethyl sulfur pentafluoride (SF5CF3), Halon 1211 (CF2ClBr), and other halocarbons in water and gases is described. The high sensitivity of the procedure allows for introduction of minimal tracer mass (a few grams) into hydrologic systems with a large dynamic range of analytical detection (dilutions to 1:10). Analysis times by gas chromatography with electron capture detector are less than 1 min for SF6; about 2 min for SF6 and SF5CF3; and 4 min for SF6, SF5CF3, and Halon 1211. Many samples can be rapidly collected, preserved in stoppered septum bottles, and analyzed at a later time in the laboratory. Examples are provided showing the effectiveness of the gas tracer test studies in varied hydrogeological settings.

Mechanistic studies on the formation of trifluoromethyl sulfur pentafluoride, SF5CF3--a greenhouse gas.

The formation of SF5CF3(X1A'), through the radical-radical recombination of SF5(X2A1) and CF3(X2A1), was observed for the first time in low-temperature sulfur hexafluoride-carbon tetrafluoride matrices at 12 K via infrared spectroscopy upon irradiation of the ices with energetic electrons. The nu1 fundamentals of the SF5(X2A1) and CF3(X2A1) radicals were monitored at 857 and 1110 cm-1, respecti...

Estimating changes in ocean ventilation from early 1990s CFC-12 and late 2000s SF6 measurements

[1] Transient tracer measurements can constrain the rates and pathways of ocean ventilation and act as proxies for biogeochemically relevant gases such as CO2 and oxygen. Various techniques have deduced changes in ocean ventilation over decadal timescales using transient tracer measurements made on repeat sections, but these require a priori assumptions about mixing in the ocean interior. Here,...

Gas-phase Diffusive Tracer Test for the In-Situ Measurement of Tortuosity in the Vadose Zone

Robust measurements of porous-medium tortuosity are one of the many components needed for accurate characterization and prediction of fluid flow and contaminant transport in the subsurface. A gasphase diffusive tracer-test method is evaluated for the in-situ measurement of tortuosity in the vadose zone. This technique presents an alternative to employing widely-used correlations to estimate tor...

Farfield tracing of a point source discharge plume in the coastal ocean using sulfur hexafluoride.

Pathways and dilution of a point source ocean discharge in the farfield (approximately to 10-66 km) were measured using the deliberate tracer sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). The injection of SF6 was performed by bubbling the gas over a period of 6 days into an ocean outfall pipe discharging into the southeast Florida coastal ocean. The surface SF6 concentrations show that the discharged water flowed...

The carbon dioxide leakage from chambers measured using sulfur hexafluoride

In plant chamber studies, if CO2 leaking from a chamber is not quantified, it can lead to an overestimate of assimilation rates and an underestimate of respiration rates; consequently, it is critical that CO2 leakage be determined. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) was introduced into the chambers as a tracer gas to estimate leakage rates. Chamber leakage constants were determined by measuring the rate...
